A jacaranda tree comes with stunning purple flowers and a sprawling canopy of shade. Pollinating insects are attracted to numerous colours of flowers, but it’s a good idea to include some blues and purples in the mix, as there’s scientific evidence that purple, violet and blue are the colours most likely to attract bees, and purple is among the colours that most attract butterflies.

Because they have good color vision, bees flock to flowers that are blue, purple, white, and yellow.

Purple flowers bees love. Sweet alyssum will also attract all sorts of beneficial insects. Sweet alyssum (lobularia maritima) dense clusters of tiny flower that range in color from white, pink, lavender and purple. If planted in the ground, your mint will gleefully spread.
This low growing perennial — scabiosa — attracts pollinators with purple or pink flowers that seem to float above the leaves on long stems. Mint is a perennial herb that is best grown in containers to prevent unwanted spread. As the name suggests, bees love bee balm as well as other pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.the flowers of bee balm can come in a variety of colors from purple to red and are also edible.
Enjoy this hypnotic short video of a glorious blue banded bee sipping from purple salvia flowers (less than 2 minute video): The jacaranda originates from brazil. If attracting bees to your garden is important to you, skip plants such as eucalyptus, ferns, and lemongrass.
The bees love flowers with large open petals to land on and flowers that have tubular shapes and are easier access to the nectar and pollen. The flowers listed with stars offer the most nectar and pollen (so bees adore them!). This is a protected plant around here.
Below is a dark sweat bee on poppy petals. The jacaranda tree is fast growing and the purple flowers bloom in mid to late spring. Pincushion flowers for the pollinator garden.
Bees are sensitive to chemicals, so opt for organic fertilizers and avoid toxic pesticides and herbicides. Fireweed likes cooler areas so it doesn’t flower in the heat of the summer, but is abundant in the northwestern us, canada, and alaska. As well as wild bees liking the flowers, the seed heads are attractive to insects and birds.
So instead of the common petunia (which will not feed the bees), try these annual flowers instead. You will see it on the left of the first photo. It attracts thousands of bees and when it goes to seed is full of little yellow finches.
If that’s too dark for you, penstemon ‘juicy grape’ is a lighter purple. One of the most beautiful plants, with cascading tresses of purple flowers in spring. They send up pretty pink and purple flowers that will readily go to seed.
Penstemons are such good garden plants. Bees love them and you’ll love the richly coloured flowers. Penstemon penstemon ‘blackbird’ has dark purple flowers that bloom all summer and through autumn until the first frosts.
Bees can see the colour purple more clearly than any other colour, and some of the best bee plants, such as lavender, alliums, buddleja and catmint, have purple flowers. These are brilliant great big weeds. The light purple flowers start blooming at the bottom of the stalks and work their way up as the summer progresses.
The bees love them, but when the flowers are finished, cut them back so the plants don’t spread out of control. You can often find bee balm used medicinally in herbal teas and salves to help combat digestive issues, soothe cold symptoms, and even prevent biting insects. That said, many flowers in other colours will still attract bees, so don’t pull them up!
This is not an easy color for plants to produce, however, so the flower must get crafty to manifest a “blue halo” that will lure the bees in. The most likely colors to attract bees, according to scientists, are purple, violet and blue. Though remember a weed is only a plant in the wrong place and there is a place for this weed.
The flat shape of the flowers are especially welcoming to butterflies.
